HISTORY OF MADHYA PRADESH
Earliest records reveal that Emperor Ashoka controlled the
Mauryan Empire in Malwa. Following the Mauryan rule, Madhya
Pradesh came under the power of Sungas, Guptas and the Huns
respectively. Then came the turn of Parmaras- Raja Bhoj, to
be specific- from whom the current capital city of Madhya
Pradesh, Bhopal, derives its name. The glorious rule of Chandelas
remained between 12th and 16th centuries after which the region
became the focal point between Muslim and Hindu rulers. The
triumph of the Marathas was shortlived before the British
annexed the region. It was only in 1956 that the region was
consolidated as a state under independent India.
