HISTORY OF HIMACHAL PRADESH
This region served as trade routes to Tibet, Central Asia
and Kashmir in the ancient times and was inhabited by various
tribal groups. After the Aryans assimilated the tribals, the
region saw many empires come and go, such as the Mauryas,
Kushans, Guptas and the Kannaujs. Even though several portions
of the region were ruled by kings of Bengal, it were the Rajput
invaders who were responsible for founding the later regions
in Himachal Pradesh. After the British rule and the subsequent
independence, the State of Himachal Pradesh came into being
in 1948. Later the Pahari-speaking parts under Punjab administration
including the Kangra, Kullu, Lahaul and Spiti were integrated
into Himachal Pradesh in 1966 with the state receiving independent
statehood in 1971.
