HISTORY OF AGRA
The city of Agra came into being when Sultan Sikander Lodi
established his capital here in 1501. The Lodi Empire flourished
till 1526, when the city fell into the hands of Emperor Babar.
The city reached its peak under the Mughal rule, which left
its mark by the way of stunning architectural marvels. In
1761, the city fell to Jats, before being taken over by Marathas
in 1770. Soon Agra too got entangled in the British rule by
1803.
TOURIST ATTRACTIONS OF AGRA
Without a doubt, the Taj Mahal is the premier tourist attraction
of Agra, and indeed of India also. Taj Mahal- a vision in
white- is a mausoleum built by Shahjahan in the memory of
his wife, Mumtaz Mahal. The Taj Mahal came into being after
20 years of construction. Situated on the banks of River Yamuna,
four minarets grace the Taj Mahal on all sides. The Taj Mahal
is carved with flowers and inlaid with thousands of semi precious
stones.
The nearby Agra Fort is a massive structure in red sandstone
that was built by Emperor Akbar in 1565. Used for military
purposes, it was upgraded as a palace by Shahjahan who made
some additional changes to the fort. Within the precincts
of the fort lie some impressive structures such as Moti Masjid,
Jehangir's Palace, Musamman Burj, Shish Mahal, Khas Mahal,
and the Diwan-I-Am & Diwan-I-Khas.
One can also visit Akbar's Mausoleum at Sikandra. The architectural
style is a blend of Islamic, Hindu, Buddhist, Jain and Christian
motifs. Enter through the stunning southern gateway and witness
the exquisite care with which white marble patterns have been
inlaid on red sandstone.
